Dr. Barbara Materna is the Chief of the Occupational Health Branch in the California Department of Public Health (CDPH.) The Occupational Health Branch is a non-regulatory public health program aimed at promoting healthy workplaces for all Californians. Dr. Materna is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with over 30 years of occupational health experience and holds a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of California at Berkeley. Her work at CDPH has focused on diverse topics including occupational lead poisoning prevention, wildland firefighter exposures, injuries among refuse collectors, lung disease related to flavoring chemicals, and the use of respiratory protection for prevention of aerosol transmissible diseases.
