Topic Overview: In this presentation, we will review the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) report Through the Eyes of the Workforce: Creating Joy, Meaning and Safer Healthcare and make the argument that worker safety is a fundamental precondition to patient safety. We will describe the epidemiology of physical and psychological harms that healthcare workers face, as well as organizational strategies to bring a higher priority to this issue. Key recommendations from the report will be discussed, with an emphasis on takeaways that participants can bring back to their organizations. In particular, the need to tighten the linkage between occupational health and patient safety will be highlighted.
